Set in August 1979 in the Spanish province of Alicante, Ernesto, the young son of a politician, and Audray, a French actress, unleash their passion in the garden of a mansion belonging to a right-wing Spanish marquis. Mixing sex, drugs and alcohol does not always end well and Audray is accidentally crushed by a stone statue that once belonged to Caligula. For a few minutes, Ernesto considers her dead and selfishly imagines his incipient career in politics. Panicked, he decides to push her body into the well next to the pool. Suddenly, the girl exhales a muffled groan. But luck is not on Audray's side. Ernesto grabs her by the hair and sinks her head beneath the water. He soon enlists the help of his aunt and her husband, the keepers of the house, who are experts in "getting rid of problems" to ensure the name of their boss and his house is not stained.

To capture the suspense and tense tone of the book, the cover design captures the moment after Audray's death as she begins to slowly sink to the bottom of the well. The young actress is illuminated by the light shining above her and revealing her cold, dead skin that is as white as the marble statue that crushed her; her body suspended in the cool green water, hinting at the cold-hearted nature of her killer and those around her.
