TYPOGRAPHY BOOK COVER DESIGN

Typography is far more than letters forming words, sentences and titles: your font and layout decisions enhance legibility and promote mood, feelings and intent. Typography conveys genre while also pointing towards narrative.

Font choices communicate power, horror, elegance, romance, adventure, etc., so compelling typography becomes a critical aspect of book cover design. Typography stimulates emotions, memories and conditioning: The ornate serif faces on vintage bible covers or the hand-designed fonts from classic horror film posters and pulp detective magazines. Of course, the simple memorable designs compromising iconic logos such as IBM, Coke, FedEx and Google — Type designs etched upon the cultural mind without any accompanying imagery.

Never underestimate powerful typography!

Fonts are physical

Fonts express physical properties. Whereas delicate, tall and thin typefaces convey feminine beauty, heavy, bold fonts communicate masculine power. Italicized text expresses movement and dynamism while round fonts appear soft and gentle. Handcrafted fonts express ideas unique to their specific context.

Fonts are psychological

Every word and letter we process taps our subconscious. Font psychology studies the connection between type aesthetics and how our mind absorbs, retains and associates typeface design with feelings and memories. Font choice is a critical and powerful aspect of your book cover’s impact, affecting consumers, stimulating emotions and generating sales.

Coverkitchen puts great thought into typography. Here are three stunning examples cooked up in our magical kitchen:

Thinking Backwards: The Art of Problem Solving in Business

The bold white and black text pops off the red background for Rob Van Haastrecht & Martin Scheepbouwer’s Thinking Backwards: The Art of Problem Solving in Business. The reversed letters cleverly echo the title while remaining legible and eye-catching. Simple, modern and clean sans serif fonts create a bond of trust and know-how!

99 Months: The Case of the Sydney Double Murders

The true story of an innocent man found guilty of murder rings from the cover with the stylized hand-crafted type incorporating the chain links while echoing pulp magazines. This incredible cover screams off of any website or bookstore display!

Path

The delicate and beautiful hand-drawn title and simple subtitle echo the book's themes of nature and personal growth while also suggesting movement (such as walking into the woods). The flower accenting the title conveys love and beauty while the cover as a whole reflects meditation and inner peace.
